Pewter castings year nine term 0ne
This year we experimented with the laser by cutting designs out of 4mm balsa wood and then assembling them to cast. Some designs worked well h, however many students still used the cuttlefish shell to make their moulds

Chess board
Year twelve students need to demonstrate their abilities using the circular saw, compound mitre saw and the thicknesser planer. I have found that the chess board is a great project to achieve this unit of work. Below is one of the boards made by a student with a lovely finished border.
Wood turning
With some students on the lathe for the second time, they have an opportunity to design and turn a bowl of their own choice. in year nine student complete a potpourri bowl then in year eleven explore the possibilities of using odd woods and creative designs.
Acrylic work
The year seven students design a handle for a cheese slicer using plasticine to study the contours of their hands. This helps them to better understand the ergonomics applied to items that we use. They finally make the handle out of acrylic looking at all the properties of the material as they go. The handle is fitted to a cheese knife blade.
As some students have had siblings doing the same course the course was modified to include pâté knives and a platter with a small bowl

As part of the year nine projects, this student used the jigsaw unit to create this lovely clock using her own design and cut it out of 10mm ply.
